ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Brent Lysander and Matt Bush absolutely dominated San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon, leading No. 14 Sonoma State to a doubleheader sweep at Seawolf Diamond. Behind Lysander, SSU won game one 7-0 before Bush led the team to a 1-0 win in the nightcap. The win pushes SSU's winning streak to ten in a row and leaves them at 23-5, 13-2 CCAA heading into tomorrow's series finale. The Gators fall to 5-23, 4-15 CCAA.
Sonoma State's ten-game winning streak is their longest since a 13-gamer in 2003. The Seawolves are off to the best start in school history and are now 17-1 this season at Seawolf Diamond.
Lysander, Saturday's game one winner, allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out six in a nine-inning complete game effort. He lowered his ERA to 1.12 and upped his record to 4-1 on the season.
Despite Lysander's dominance, the first game was close for the most part as SF State's Brandon Glazebrook allowed just three runs through seven innings. SSU opened up the floodgates in the eighth inning with four runs off a trio of Gator relievers. Tyrese McDaniel had three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the attack. Nick Nosti and Tyler Wightman also had two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Matt Bush was just as dominating as Lysander, allowing just two hits and striking out four in seven. He was matched up with SF State's Ben Horner, who, despite six walks did a good job of keeping the Seawolves off the scoreboard.
Things began to unravel for the Gators in the seventh when Horner hit David Adler with a pitch to lead things off. After a call to the bullpen, Adler moved on to second via a passed ball before Nick Nosti worked a walk. With Eli Rimes at the plate, SF State catcher Eric Sturges committed another passed ball to put runners at second and third. Rimes was then walked intentionally, to bring up cleanup hitter Tyler Wightman with the bases juiced and nobody out. Wightman wasted little time, rocketing an offering off the top of the left field fence to bring home Adler with the winning run.
Wightman and Eli Rimes each had two hits for SSU. The win lifted Bush's record to 5-1 on the season, tying him with Bryan Oland for the team lead in victories. His ERA dropped to 1.93 and the Seawolves' team ERA went down to a microscopic 2.36.
The series concludes tomorrow with a single game at noon in San Francisco.
