ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State got solid pitching and a little trickery at the end to beat UC San Diego 2-0 in the finale of a four-game set on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves took the series 3-1 over the Tritons and improve to 12-4, 7-1 CCAA. UCSD drops to 12-8, 4-4 CCAA.
The win improves Sonoma State's home record to 11-1 on the season.
Matt Garnett, in his second start of the season, allowed just three hits over 4.2 innings of work to earn the win. Nick O'Brien was just as good in 3.1 innings of relief, yielding only two hits and striking out four. Paige Dumont pitched the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
SSU got on the board in the first inning when UCSD starter Michael Thomson walked Tyrese McDaniel with the bases loaded, plating B.J. Collom. The Seawolves made it 2-0 in the third when Collom singled, then was brought home on a Tyler Wightman double.
Wightman had three of SSU's hits, including two doubles, raising his batting average to .378 on the season. Collom was 1-for-2, leaving him at .419 at the end of the day.
UCSD made things interesting in the ninth against Dumont. After a one-out single by Buck Wright, Dumont was able to get Matt Cantele out. The next batter, Scott Clement, lined a single, to presumably bring up cleanup hitter David Morehead as the go-ahead run. However, as the ball was thrown in from the outfield, Wright didn't see that SSU shortstop Leo Avila had not sent it back to Dumont and when he stepped off second base, he was tagged out via the old hidden ball trick.
The Seawolves are on the road next weekend at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The four-game series gets underway on Friday.
