SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif- For the second year in a row the Southern California Intercollegiate Championship individual medalist calls Sonoma State home. Sophomore
Jarin Todd beat Leonardo Di Marino of West Florida in a playoff to take the individual championship on Tuesday afternoon in San Juan Capistrano. Todd follows
Kyle Hopkins of SSU who won the title in 2006. As a team, the Seawolves finished fourth in a very impressive field.
Todd shot 70-66-72--208 to lead the Seawolves. Di Marino of West Florida shot a 68 in the final round to pull even with Todd, but the nation's top ranked Division II golfer got the win on the first playoff hole.
It is the third individual championship of the 2006-07 season for Todd. He won in the fall at the InterWest Chico Invitational and the Mauna Lani Intercollegiate.
Kyle Hopkins, who won this event a year ago, took 11th after shooting 72-70-75--217. He was one stroke ahead of
Chris Galvin (68-77-73--218).
Spencer Shishido (75-78-76--229) and
Daniel MacDonough (76-78-79--233) rounded things out for the 19th ranked Seawolves.
West Florida took the team title with an amazing 275-280-283--838. They beat out second place Barry by 27 strokes. SSU trailed third place St. Edward's by just one stroke and the Seawolves were 20 strokes ahead of 5th place Chico State.
The Seawolves, ranked 19th in the latest Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll, competed amongst the best Division II has to offer. No. 7 West Florida finished 1st, No. 5 Barry finished 2nd, and No. 3 St. Edward's finished 3rd. SSU was ahead of the following ranked squads: No. 18 Chico State (5th), No. 5 Abilene Christian (8th), No. 9t Central Oklahoma (9th), No. 9t Cameron (10th), and No. 14 Washburn (11th).
The Seawolves compete in the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational next week.
