Seawolves Fall In Semifinals To Humboldt State

Claire Hiney clubbed her team-high fourth homer of the year on Sunday
TURLOCK, Calif-  Sonoma State's magic at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions ran out on Sunday, one game short of the championship.  The Seawolves led on three occasions, but a late comeback by No. 3 Humboldt State resulted in a 4-3 win for the Lumberjacks. The loss leaves SSU at 20-25 on the season after a fantastic run against some of the top teams in the west region.

Sonoma State went 5-2 at the tournament with wins over Hawaii Pacific, Western Washington, Central Washington, BYU Hawaii, and Seattle.  Humboldt State went on to win the championship game over Cal State Stanislaus.

The Seawolves got out to a first inning lead when Shyrle Hawes uncorked an RBI double.  As would be a recurring theme in the game, the 'Jacks were quick to answer with a run in the second.  After a Claire Hiney homer made it 2-1 SSU in the 5th, Humboldt came right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

Melissa Calvin drove home a run on a single in the sixth to put the Seawolves up 3-2, but this time HSU got two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tournament MVP Lizzy Prescott, who allowed just one run in 34.2 innings over the weekend, was able to get the last five outs to preserve the win.

Ashley Eisemann led SSU in hitting during the tournament with a .375 average and seven RBIs.  Lindsay Emmel was SSU's lone representative on the All-Tournament team.  She went 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 28 innings.
