ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State's school record 22-game winning streak was snapped on Friday afternoon as the Seawolves lost to Cal State San Bernardino 4-3 in CCAA action at Seawolf Diamond. The loss is the first since March 10th for the ninth-ranked Seawolves as they fall to 35-6, 18-3 CCAA. With the win the Coyotes drop to 22-15, 13-12 CCAA.
The Coyotes struck first when, in the first inning, Justin Roberson led off the game with a single, stole second, and came around to score on a Kyle Walton RBI single. Sonoma State stormed back with two runs in the second when Tyler Wightman drove home two on a double to right center.
CSUSB scored two more times in the top of the second in unusual fashion. After Justin Watson doubled to lead off the inning, SSU starter Bryan Oland set down the next two batters quickly, though Watson did move to third on a groundout. Leadoff hitter Justin Roberson then walked to set up first and third with two outs. On the next pitch, Roberson stole second, but Leo Avila, after receiving the catcher's throw, fired the ball to third base to try and catch Watson napping. The ball, however, ended up in the CSUSB dugout, allowing both runners to score, unearned.
SSU tied the game up at three in the fourth on Chase McGuire's seventh home run of the year, but the Coyotes were able to get the game-winner in the eighth. Following a single by Drew Valenzuela, Walton doubled past SSU rightfielder B.J. Collom to allow Valenzuela to score from first.
Bryan Oland, despite being tagged with the loss, pitched brilliantly, allowing just two earned runs and striking out a career-high 12 batters. His counterpart, Mattt Long, went 6 1/3 innings, yielding five hits and striking out six. Ward Minich was outstanding in a relief outing, setting down all eight batters he faced to earn the win.
The Seawolves and Coyotes will play a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 11:00 am.
