ROHNERT PARK, Calif- One day after their 22-game winning streak was broken, the Sonoma State baseball team went about starting a new one with a 16-1 shelling of Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, the day was shortened to a single game due to rain. The teams will try to play two on Sunday. SSU improves to 36-6, 19-3 CCAA while CSUSB drops to 22-16, 13-13 CCAA.
The Seawolves tied a season-high with four home runs on Saturday. The first two were from catcher Konrad Thieme and the others came from Chase McGuire and Tyrese McDaniel.
The Seawolves also got a stellar pitching performance from Brent Lysander, who stuck out nine and allowed just one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Lysander improved his record to 7-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to a CCAA-best 1.49. Gary Scott pitched the final 2 1/3, allowing no hits and striking out two.
The Seawolves scored single runs in the first and second before the Coyotes cut the lead in half with a run in the third. Up 2-1, the Seawolves got a little breathing room in the fourth when Konrad Thieme hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left center field.
Up 5-1, the Seawolves put up eight runs in the sixth inning off reliever Steven Crang. With two outs and a runner on first, Leo Avila hit a ground ball to CSUSB's Nick Hammer, but the shortstop's throw to second went wide, allowing the runner to get to second safely and, in turn, prolonging the inning. Three singles, a double, and a home run by Tyrese McDaniel later and the Seawolves had put eight unearned runs on the board.
With a 13-1 lead, the Seawolves' Chase McGuire lifted a three-run home run to left center in the eighth to set the score at 16-1. It was McGuire's eighth home run of the year, putting him just one off Eli Rimes' team-high of nine.
The Seawolves and Coyotes will finish out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 10:00 am.
