ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The Sonoma State softball team used a seven-run fourth inning to win the opening game against Cal State San Bernardino 7-3 Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves, however, fell in the nightcap 4-1.
Lindsay Emmel (13-10) was once again dominant, posting seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. She allowed only two earned runs and scattered seven hits. Emmel now stands just eight strikeouts away from the single season record of 169 set by Brenda Scally in 1997.
In the opener, the Seawolves (26-27 overall, 12-16 CCAA) trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, and hadn't had a baserunner. All that changed when CSUSB starter Tawni Baker hit the first two batters and walked another to load the bases. After a sacrifice fly by Melissa Calvin tied the game, Shyrle Hawes doubled in two runs and Britni Geary smashed her first career home run to break open the rally.
In game two the Coyotes were able to keep the Seawolves out of the big inning. SSU did took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but it wouldn't last long. CSUSB answered with runs in the fourth and fifth then two more in the seventh for the 4-1 victory.
Simone Brandalise (6-13) took the loss going all seven innings and allowing only one earned run on six hits.
Claire Hiney led the Seawolf offense with three hits, all coming in the nightcap, she was the only Seawolf with multiple hits on the day.
The split gave Sonoma State its second consecutive series victory over a CCAA opponent. Last weekend the Seawolves took three-of-four games from Cal State Dominguez Hills as well.
The Seawolves are back in action next weekend when they travel to Seaside to play Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, March 20 at 1:00 pm.
