ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Laurel Stricklin netted her second hat trick of the season and Kitlyn Brownrigg became the career saves leader, but it was not enough as Cal State East Bay scored the final four goals of the game to down the Seawolves 11-8 Friday afternoon.
Sonoma State (17-18 overall, 7-12 WWPA) trailed 1-0 after the first period and it looked like it might be a defensive struggle. However, both teams scored four goals in the second period, Sonoma State scoring three in the final two minutes of the half, and the offensive showcase was on.
The Pioneers extended their 5-4 halftime lead to 7-5 in the third period before SSU answered in the fourth. Sonoma State scored the first three goals of the period to take an 8-7 lead. But it wouldn't last long as Cal State East Bay netted the last four goals to take the game 11-8.
Stricklin led the Seawolves with three goals as she was the only Seawolf with multiple goals.
Sonoma State goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brownrigg had 13 saves to move her career total to 455 saves, which now makes her the all-time saves leader at Sonoma State. She passed Kimberly Fortson who held the previous record with 446 saves from 2005-2006. Brownrigg needs just 13 more saves to tie the single-season record for saves of 303 set in 2005 by Fortson. Brownrigg now has 290 on the year.
Sonoma State is back inaction tomorrow when they play Santa Clara in the final home game of the season at 1:00 pm. Seniors Roxanna McEwen and Brownrigg will be honored after the game.
