Emmel Gets Record; Seawolves Split With Otters

Lindsay Emmel has struck out 173 batters this season
SALINAS, Calif-  Lindsay Emmel struck out ten batters on Saturday to establish a new single-season record in the category, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Seawolves splitting another doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Seawolves lost game one 4-2 before bouncing back for a 7-2 win in game two.  The split leaves the Seawolves at 28-29, 14-18 CCAA.

Emmel struck out eight in her game one loss, then pitched the final inning of game two and tacked on two more K's.  She has now struck out 173 batters this season, surpassing the previous record of 169 set by Brenda Scally in 1997.

Seeing CSUMB starter Jessica Boyle for the third consecutive game didn't seem to help the Seawolf bats as they could generate just two runs and six hits in the opener.  Alex Winters and Ashley Eisemann were just about the only Seawolves to have success against Boyle as they each went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.  Emmel went the distance for SSU, allowing five hits and one walk.  Only two of the runs she allowed were earned.

As was the case on Friday, Jessica Boyle's second start of the day proved more troublesome.  SSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead through six innings before CSUMB plated a couple in their half of the sixth.  Simone Brandalise earned her second win in as many days with a six-inning, eight-hit performance.  Alex Winters went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.  Melissa Calvin was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and both Britni Geary and Shyrle Hawes drove in a pair as well.

Winters raised her average to .351 on the year with her 5-for-7 performance on Saturday.

The Seawolves will close out the regular season next weekend when they host Chico State.
