POMONA, Calif- The ninth-ranked Sonoma State baseball team did just about everything right on Saturday afternoon as they picked up a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Pomona with 10-1 and 11-0 victories. With the wins, the Seawolves have won 27 of their last 28 games and they improve to 40-6, 23-3 CCAA. The Broncos drop to 16-26, 9-21.
Since their 22-game winning streak was snapped by Cal State San Bernardino last Friday, the Seawolves have reeled off five consecutive wins. Ranked 2nd in the first NCAA West Regional poll, released last week, they have a 35-3 record since February 24th.
In game one, Bryan Oland (W, 8-1) was brilliant, striking out four while allowing just seven hits in 7.2 innings of shutout ball. SSU used a four-run third inning and a three-run fifth inning to give Oland more than enough cushion.
Nick Nosti led the Seawolves with four hits and two runs scored. B.J. Collom went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs and Tyler Wightman went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBIs, and his fourth home run of the year. Catcher Ian Bridges also hit a home run, his third of the season.
In the nightcap, Brent Lysander saw Oland's performance, and tried to one-up him as the junior tossed a complete-game shutout. The San Diego native struck out ten and allowed just one walk on his way to his third shutout of the season. Lysander also improved to 8-1 and lowered his ERA to a CCAA-best 1.35.
David Adler was the igniter at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-5 with three runs scored. B.J. Collom continued on his tear, with a 3-for-3 performance that lifted his average to .405. Collom scored twice, drove in three runs, and hit his sixth home run of the year. Eli Rimes also went deep, re-taking the team lead over Chase McGuire with his tenth homer of the season.
The Seawolves and Broncos will play another doubleheader on Sunday.
