ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Cal State L.A. hung on for a 3-2 win over Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon to salvage the final game of a four-game CCAA series between two of the top four teams in the nation. Sonoma State, ranked No. 4 in the nation, took the first three games over the top-ranked Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles. Sunday's loss leaves the Seawolves at 44-8, 27-5 CCAA while the Golden Eagles go to 37-10-1, 25-7 CCAA.
Cal State L.A. got two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead on SSU starter Glen Wood, making his first start of the season. After a Kurt Crowell single, Brian Hernandez doubled him home for the first run. Hernandez then came around to score on a Matt Winkelman sacrifice fly.
The Golden Eagles would tack on another run in the seventh when Adam Klein drew a walk with the bases loaded. Seawolf reliever Matt Garnett then induced two quick outs to get out of the jam and leave the score 3-0.
SSU got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Brandon Zenimura singled, then scored on a David Adler ground out. The score was cut to 3-2 one inning later when Eli Rimes hit his third home run of the series, and 13th of the season, to deep right field. The Seawolves would have a chance to pull even in the eighth, but CSULA reliever Arturo Reyes got Leo Avila to pop out with two outs and two runners on.
In the ninth inning, the Seawolves staged another rally. After two quick outs were recorded by Reyes, B.J. Collom legged out an infield single. A walk to Tyler Wightman brought up Eli Rimes, who had already driven in ten runs in the series against Cal State L.A.. Reyes, however, got Rimes swinging to end the game and give the Golden Eagles a reason to cheer after an otherwise tough series.
Hector Molina (W, 9-1) got the win after throwing five shutout innings. He walked four, struck out five, and allowed two hits. Reyes' save was his eighth of the season. Adam Klein and Jack Roche each had two hits for Cal State L.A..
Glen Wood (L, 2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs and striking out two. Collom and Rimes each had two hits to lead a seven-hit Seawolf attack.
Both teams used five pitchers in the nearly four hour-long game.
The Seawolves will conclude the regular season next weekend against long-time rival Chico State. The first two games are in Rohnert Park (Friday and Saturday) before the series concludes with a Sunday doubleheader in Chico.
