CARSON, Calif- A week removed from an impressive showing at the Tournament of Champions, the Sonoma State softball team kept the good times rolling with a decisive sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon in Carson. Claire Hiney had two home runs to tie the single-season school record of six as SSU won by scores of 12-1 and 4-3. The wins lift SSU's record to 22-25, 8-14 CCAA. The Toros drop to 20-20, 8-12 CCAA.
Hiney, just a freshman, has hit six home runs this season to tie her with Erin Pacheco for the school record. Pacheco had six round trippers in 1998 and 1999. Hiney is also now halfway to the school's career home run record of 12 (set by Pacheco). As a team, SSU's four home runs on the day established a new single-season record. The Seawolves have hit 20 homers this season, surpassing the mark of 18 set in 2006.
At 22-25, the Seawolves have won seven of their last nine and are within three games of .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2000.
In game one, the Seawolves used a seven-run second inning to blow things open. Behind the stellar pitching of Lindsay Emmel, they'd need just seven innings to finish of the Toros. Hiney was 2-for-3 with three runs, a homer, and four RBIs and Megan Ochylski went deep and drove in a career-high five runs as well.
Game two saw the Toros make it close, but two more SSU homers put the game just out of reach. In addition to Hiney's second home run of the day, Alex Bright connected on her first collegiate home run and Alex Winters went 2-for-4. Sonoma State's pitchers, starter Simone Brandalise and reliever Lindsay Emmel, were brilliant again, combining to allow just five hits and no earned runs. CSUDH was able to score thanks to four Seawolf errors, the only negative on an otherwise fantastic day.
The Seawolves and Toros will meet in another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Carson.
