CARSON, Calif- Sonoma State split a CCAA softball doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon at Toro Diamond in Carson. With the win, Sonoma State takes three of four in the series for their first CCAA series win since 2005 as they improve to 23-26, 9-15 CCAA. The Toros drop to 21-21, 9-13 CCAA.
After a doubleheader sweep on Thursday, the Seawolves were thinking series sweep after game one. SSU used a six-run fourth inning to blow open a close game. Lindsay Emmel continued her dominance on the mound with eight more strikeouts as she moved over .500 on the season at 11-10. Alex Winters, who entered the game swinging one of the hottest bats in the conference, didn't slow down, drilling three hits and score three times. Ashley Eisemann pitched in with two hits and Melissa Calvin drove in three.
In game two, SSU was on the other end of the 'big inning' as a four-run Toro fifth gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish. SSU had 12 hits in the game, three by Megan Ochylski and two from Claire Hiney, Shyrle Hawes, and Alex Winter, but it would be the Toros getting the hits where they needed them. Simone Brandalise was tagged with the loss after yielding nine hits and seven runs in five innings of work. Lindsay Emmel pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
The Seawolves, winners of eight of their last eleven, will try to keep the momentum going on Wednesday, April 11th when they play at Notre Dame de Namur.
