Tritons Spoil Seawolves' Upset Bid

Emmel had eight strikeouts in the 1-0 loss
TURLOCK, Calif. - Lindsay Emmel carried a no-hitter for six innings in the NCAA West Regional Softball Tournament in Turlock, Calif., Thursday afternoon. Then in the seventh inning, UC San Diego's first three batters recorded singles and won the game 1-0 to advance to the winner's bracket.

Emmel (14-14) was effective in the first two innings allowing only one Triton to reach base becasue of an error. Then Emmel, Sonoma State's single-season strikeout leader, ran off eight strikeouts in the third fourth and fifth innings, six of then in succession. In the sixth inning Emmel again sat UCSD (23-12) down in order.

The Seventh inning was the first, and only, sign of Triton offense all game long. Amanda Eliades scorched a sinlge down the left field line to begin the inning then Dallas Hernandez followed with a seeing-eye single up the middle, setting the stage for Triton slugger Jenny Maze. After two unsuccessful sacrafice bunt attempts, Maze singled on an 0-2 pitch to center field to score Hernandez and spoil Emmel's gem.

Emmel wasn't the only pitcher who was in complete command of the pitching circle. UCSD's Melissa Ward kept SSU's batters at bay, allowing only three singles, two walks but didn't allow an SSU baserunner advance past first base.

Claire Hiney recorded two of SSU's three hits, she was the only Seawolf to reach base twice. Shyrle Hawes also had a hit.

Sonoma State is back in action tomorrow at 11:30 am and will face Western Washington, which lost to Cal State Stanislaus 2-0, at 11:30 am as both teams will look to advance out of the loser's bracket.
