Seawolves Advance To Championship Game With Win Over Chico

B.J. Collom slides home safely with another Seawolf run
LOS ANGELES, Calif-  It may not have been the prettiest game every played, but the Sonoma State baseball team will take the result, a 7-1 victory over Chico State that puts the Seawolves in the championship game of the CCAA Tournament.  Brent Lysander tossed an absolute gem for his tenth win of the as the second-ranked Seawolves improve to 48-10 on the year.  The Wildcats drop to 45-12.

The Seawolves will play the winner of tonight's final game, between Chico State and UC San Diego, at noon tomorrow.  If the Seawolves win that game, they take home the CCAA Championship trophy.  If they lose, another game will be played 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.

Despite a season-high six errors on the day, Brent Lysander escaped unscathed again and again as the Wildcats had trouble generating offense off the CCAA Pitcher of the Year.  The sophomore from San Diego went 8 1/3 innings, allowing just five hits and one unearned run while striking out five to improve to 10-1 on the season.  Paige Dumont got the final two outs to seal the deal for SSU.

Billy Spottiswood was the hard-luck loser for the Wildcats after yielding five hits and five runs, though just two of them were earned.

SSU picked up the first run of the game in the second inning when a Chase McGuire single scooted beyond left fielder Carl Fairburn, allowing Tyrese McDaniel to score from first.  The Seawolves made it 2-0 in the sixth inning when Tyler Wightman singled off the right field wall to score David Adler, who reached earlier in the inning on an error.  The Wildcats walked B.J. Collom to face Tyler Wightman, a move they'd regret as the senior DH had two hits and drove in three on the day.

After the Wildcats got a run back on an RBI ground out by Jesus Luna, SSU tacked on four more runs.  Two came in the eighth on a Wightman two-run single and two more in the ninth.
