LOS ANGELES, Calif- Sonoma State finished off a complete sweep through the CCAA Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 15-5 win over UC San Diego. The Seawolves capture their fourth CCAA title since 1999 and first since 2004 with the win. Senior Chase McGuire was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
The Seawolves, ranked 2nd in the nation and 1st in the west region, improve to 49-10 on the season. They are just one away from the school record for victories in a season, 50 (in 2001). With a 3-0 record at the CCAA Championship, the Seawolves all but wrap up the No. 1 seed in next week's NCAA West Regional tournament.
For SSU head coach
John Goelz, Saturday's victory marks the eighth conference championship in his 22-year career. Goelz's teams won Northern California Athletic Conference championships in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1998 before moving to the CCAA and picking up crowns in 1999, 2001, 2003 and now 2007.
UCSD got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, just as they had in the CCAA Tournament opener on Thursday. However, the Triton lead would not last long.
Plagued by control issues, UC San Diego (37-23) used eight pitchers, starting with Max Kwan-Rosenbush, who earned his first start of the season. Kwan-Rosenbush ran into trouble in the 2nd inning when he walked a couple batters and hit two more. SSU put three runs up in the second inning to draw even. A Chase McGuire RBI single in the third gave SSU a 4-3 lead, but UCSD was quick to tie things up again in the fourth.
It stayed tied for the next couple of innings before SSU finally broke things open. A six-run seventh gave SSU what would turn out to be an insurmountable lead. UCSD got back one run in the seventh, but the Seawolves weren't done, tacking on two in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Nick Nosti, though he wasn't a starter, was the only Seawolf with multiple hits. Nosti finished 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs. Eight other Seawolves had a single hit to contribute to SSU's 10-hit attack. The Seawolves were aided by eight walks and seven hit batsmen.
McGuire, the tournament's MVP, went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs on Saturday. The Chula Vista native finished the tournament 6-for-11 with three runs scored and four driven in. Joining McGuire on the All-Tournament team were pitcher Brent Lysander, catcher Ian Bridges, and designated hitter Tyler Wightman.
Nick O'Brien earned the win out of the bullpen for the Seawolves. He tossed three innings, allowing just one run. Matt Bush, the Seawolf starting pitcher, allowed three earned runs (four total) in four innings of work. Paige Dumont tossed two hitless innings to, once again, close the door.
The Seawolves will now await official word from the NCAA West Regional committee on Sunday as to where's, when's and who's of next week's tournament. Should SSU get the number one seed, as expected, they will open up against the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
