Softball Eliminated With Heartbreaking Loss To Seattle

Ashley Eisemann belted her fourth homer of the year on Saturday
TURLOCK, Calif. - The Sonoma State softball team's magical NCAA Tournament run came to an end on  Saturday afternoon in Turlock as the Seawolves fell 3-2 in nine innings to the tournament's Cinderella team, Seattle University.  With the loss, the Seawolves finish the season at 32-32, their first .500 season since 2000.

The Seawolves, led by a youthful core containing 15 freshmen, reached the NCAA West Regional Tournament for the first since 1995 and yesterday SSU picked up its first ever NCAA Division II regional victory.

Sonoma State led 2-1 in the seventh inning with two outs, but Seattle rallied when Katie Pedersen scored on a Heather Hansen single to tie the game at 2-2. The Pedersen-Hansen duo struck again in the ninth inning to give Seattle the 3-2 win. Petersen was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with all three Redhawk runs and Hansen was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

SSU ace Lindsay Emmel was again great for the Seawolves pitching 8.2 innings and striking out nine batters. For the season Emmel finishes with 202 strikeouts, a new school record.

Sonoma State's big moment was in the fourth inning when Melissa Calvin and Ashley Eisemann hit back-to-back home runs to give SSU a 2-1 lead.  It was the second homer of the year for Calvin and the fourth for Eisemann.

Claire Hiney had two hits in the game. She finished the tournament 5-for-8 with a double and was selected to the NCAA West Region All-Tournament Team.
