ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State women's soccer team got the 2007 season off to a fine start on Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Grand Canyon in the second game of the Seawolf Classic Tournament.
Brittany Peterson and
Brittany Finitz each scored as the Seawolves start the year with a win for the second year in a row.
Despite out shooting GCU 11-2 in the first half, the Seawolves couldn't find net until just nine seconds were left in the half when Peterson booted in the ball out of a scramble. The lead held thanks to some outstanding defensive efforts and at least one brilliant save by freshman goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti.
The Seawolves were able to put the icing on the cake in the 84th minute when
Lindsay Catton set up a goal with a perfectly placed corner kick. As the ball was traveling into the net, freshman Finitz gave it a tap and was credited with the goal. Catton earned an assist on the play.
The Seawolves led in shots 19-4 and corner kicks 11-1. They also had a 14-6 lead in foul committed.
The tournament continues tomorrow with two men's games. The SSU women are back in action on Saturday when they face No. 17 Seattle University, a 3-0 winner over Humboldt State today.
