ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State men's soccer team got solid play from the bench, including two goals, in a 3-0 pasting of Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA men's soccer action on Friday in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves improve to 3-2-1, 2-0-0 CCAA with the win. The Warriors fall to 1-4-2, 0-2-1 CCAA.
Said head coach
Marcus Ziemer after the win, "We didn't play that sharp. The 7-day layoff (since last Friday's win over Cal State L.A.) really affected us."
However, despite an ugly game, the Seawolves will definitely take the win. Both teams battled hard in the first half without much to show for it. The Seawolves finally broke through in the 37th minute when
David Seidel scored off a beautifully placed
Brandon Dela Cruz cross. It made for a special moment for Seidel as his mother, Carol Haskel, was serving as honorary assistant coach for the day. The occasion resulted in a quick hug from his mom before play resumed.
Said Ziemer, "Our bench provided a big spark for us. It's nice to know we have a lot of weapons on the bench."
Ross Middlemiss made it 2-0 Seawolves in the 79th minute off some unselfish ball movement by
Nathan Medina and
Eric Larson. Though that was more than enough offense for the victory, SSU tacked on another goal with just 20 seconds left in the game. This time it was
Eric Lafon shooting up the center off a
Casey Dayton,
Ross Middlemiss double assist.
Brook Johnson recorded the shutout in goal and the Seawolves got an impressive defensive performance, holding the Warriors to just eight shots.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday when they host Chico State.
