Defense Holds As Seawolves Edge Wildcats, 1-0

Tracy Webster scored her first goal of the season in Sunday's win
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State got an impressive defensive performance to defeat Chico State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves improve to 3-0-0 in CCAA play and hand the CCAA North division favorite Wildcats their third straight loss as they fall to 1-3-0 in conference play.

The Seawolves earned their fourth shutout victory of the year.  Their three losses have also occurred in shutouts.

Said SSU head coach Luke Oberkirch, "This was one of the best defensive efforts we've had here in years.  We flat out gutted this one out."

Despite getting out shot by the Wildcats 9-5, the Seawolves got the break they needed in the 69th minute when a Chico defensive breakdown left Tracy Webster on a breakaway.  Webster's first shot was saved by a Chico defender, but she quickly gathered the rebound and buried the game-winner in the right side of the net.

Sonoma State's freshman goalkeeper Courtney Grixti had three saves in front of the net.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, though the Wildcats seemed to control play.  Said Oberkirch, "They played better in the first half, but I was happy with our effort in the second."

The Seawolves committed ten more fouls than the Wildcats (13-3) and trailed in corner kicks, 9-1.

Sonoma State will hit the road for their next four.  Up first is San Francisco State on Friday.
