SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- In a nip and tuck game with 15 ties and countless lead changes, San Francisco State pulled away from Sonoma State in the final moments for a 55-53 win on Saturday night in San Francisco. The loss is the fifth in the last six games for the Seawolves as they fall to 6-6, 2-4 CCAA. The Gators, off to their best start in years, improve to 9-4, 4-2 CCAA.
With the score tied at 44, SF State got a three-pointer from Alex Thomas and then a layup by Martin Flores to build a five-point advantage. SSU would cut the lead down to two on a couple occasions, including with 1:03 to go, but a turnover and a missed jumper with time expiring spelled defeat.
The Seawolves hit a season-low one three-pointer in 11 attempts and shot just 34% for the game.
Blake Saunders came off the bench for a team-high 12 points. He also had five rebounds, a total matched by teammate
Steve Cornett.
Robert Hayes had a game-high 22 points for the Gators.
The Seawolves hope to bounce back next weekend when they host Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
