SANTA ROSA, Calif- Senior Danae Wellander had a dominating night at her old stomping grounds on Friday night, leading Sonoma State to a 58-41 win over No. 12 UC San Diego. The game was played at Santa Rosa Junior College's Haehl Pavilion due to a complete shut down of SSU's campus on Friday due to inclement weather and a power outage. The win lifts the Seawolves to 9-2, 3-1 CCAA. The reigning CCAA champion Tritons suffer their first conference loss of the season and go to 10-3, 2-1 CCAA.
Wellander, in her second season at Sonoma State, played one year at SRJC and another at the University of San Francisco before SSU.
Wellander finished the night with 20 points and ten rebounds, including 13 in a second half that may have been one of the Seawolves' most complete performances in some time. The Seawolves outscored the Tritons 33-19 in the second and limited UCSD to just 29% shooting from the field (and 0-for-8 from three-point range).
Up 25-22 at the half, Sonoma State started the second half on a 12-2 run to open up a 37-24 lead. From there, they would not look back.
Sonoma State also got fine performances from Lauren Redfield (13 points, eight rebounds), Chelsey Armacost (11 points), and Genny Anderson (six points, eight rebounds).
UC San Diego was led by 12 points from both Michelle Osier and Alexis Gaskin. Osier had eight rebounds as well.
SSU was 17-of-20 from the three throw line, a marked improvement from last night when they shot just 42% in a 49-43 loss to Humboldt State. UC San Diego, on the other hand, was perfect from the line. Unfortunately for them, they only had one free throw attempt.
The Seawolves hit the road next weekend to play Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
