ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Andrew Kochevar became the ninth player in Sonoma State men's basketball history to amass 1,000 points, but Friday night's excitement would end there as the Seawolves dropped an 84-72 decision to San Francisco State in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves drop to 9-12, 5-10 CCAA while the resurgent Gators improve to 15-7, 10-5 CCAA.
Kochevar entered the game with 997 points and picked up No. 1,000 on a free throw at the 18:04 mark in the first half. Finishing the game with 1,017 points, Kochevar is just nine points behind Trevor Howe for eighth place on the all-time list.
The first half was close the entire way with the Gators finishing on a 7-0 kick to enter the break with a 34-29 lead. SSU tied the game at 38 in the first few minutes of the second, but a 7-1 Gator spurt gave them a little breathing room once again.
Slowly, but surely, SF State added to the lead as it reached its maximum bulge of 16 at 81-65 with 32 seconds left.
Kochevar finished the night 6-of-9 from the field for his team-high 20 points. He hit four three-pointers, adding to his all-time Sonoma State record.
Blake Saunders had 15 points and
Ben Washington added 14 for the Seawolves.
Chris Rodriguez led a trio of Gators in double digits with 20 points. Alex Thomas had 17 and Darryl Robinson had 11.
The Seawolves will host a hot Cal State Monterey Bay squad tomorrow night at Seawolf Gym.
