Toros Pull Away For 66-55 Win Over Seawolves

Andrew Kochevar fueled an exciting comeback bid for the Seawolves
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State used a spirited 18-0 run to get back into the game, but Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled away in the final minutes for a 66-55 victory in CCAA men's basketball action on Saturday night in Rohnert Park.  The Toros extend their winning streak to six in a row as they go to 12-6, 7-5 CCAA.  The loss drops the Seawolves to 9-9, 5-7 CCAA.

After a lackluster first half left the Seawolves down seven at 27-20, they saw the Toros go on an 18-7 run over the first ten minutes of the second half to open up an 18-point lead.

It was at this point, trailing 45-27 with 9:37 left, that the Seawolves came to life.  Andrew Kochevar, who had been held scoreless to this point, hit two three-pointers, a layup, and a pair of free throws to fuel the run.  When Keith Garner layed it in with 6:18 to go, the Seawolves had come all the way back to tie it at 45.

The Toros, however, quickly re-captured the lead with a jumper from Jerrell Smith and a Danny Tavares layup.  SSU was able to get the lead down to two points again with 4:30 to go, but Dominguez Hills pulled away in the final minutes with a 17-8 run.

Both teams had trouble hanging on to the ball as the teams combined for 38 turnovers.  They also combined for 43 fouls and 58 free throw shots.  Neither team, though, could do much from the charity stripe as CSUDH was just 18-for-35 and SSU just 12-for-23.

Nonso Nibo was the lone Toro hitting his free throws as he went 10-for-12 from the line to finish with 12 points.  CSUDH also got 12 from Danny Tavares and ten each from Rodney Yearby and Mike Steed.  Yearby added ten rebounds for the double-double.

Sonoma State got 12 points from Andrew Kochevar and 11 from Blake SaundersKeith Garner and Saunders shared team-high honors with five rebounds each.

The Seawolves will hit the road next weekend to take on Humboldt State and UC San Diego.
