Baseball Sweeps SF State; Wins Game One 22-0

Vance Otake hit a grand slam to center field in the game one rout
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State baseball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep over San Francisco State in non-conference action on Saturday at Seawolf Diamond.  The Seawolves won game one 22-0 before holding on for a 6-3 win in the nightcap.  The Seawolves go to 5-0 on the season while the Gators drop to 1-4.

The 22 runs in game one were the most by Sonoma State since they scored 23 in 2002 against Hawaii Pacific.  The margin of victory was the highest since a 32-9 win over Cal State Stanislaus in 1998.  It is believed to be the largest shutout victory in school history as well.

Sonoma State racked up 19 hits by 14 different players.  Nick Nosti was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and  Mark Pestorich was 2-for-3 with three runs as well.  Vance Otake was 2-for-3 with a grand slam to dead center, his second grand slam as a Seawolf.  Tyrese McDaniel and Konrad Thieme also homered for the Seawolves.

Overshadowed by the final score was a solid pitching performance from a trio of Seawolves.  Matt Means went the first five to earn his second win of the year before yielding to Kevin Asselin.  Asselin pitched three shutout innings and handed the game to Travis Babin, who struck out the side in the ninth.

Game two was much more competitive.  SF State got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before a towering Trevor Howell two-run homer to center field made it 2-1.  A Tyrese McDaniel sac fly in the third made it 3-1 and then RBIs by Kyle Jones and Mark Pestorich expanded the lead to four in the fifth.

SF State got two runs back on a two-run single by Ernie Munoz, but that was all they could do.  Ian Bridges led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run before the game was called to darkness.

Nick O'Brien pitched outstanding, allowing just four hits to pick up his first win of the year.

The Seawolves will host Patten University in a non-conference game on Sunday at noon.
