CHICO, Calif-
Brittany Williams laced a two-out, two-run double down the left field line in the top of the seventh to stun Chico State 2-1 in the first game of a mini-tournament on Saturday in Chico. Williams was also the winning pitcher in the game as she held the Wildcats to just three hits. The Seawolves improve to 9-13 on the season with the non-conference win.
Both starting pitchers were dominating for the first five innings. In the sixth Chico was able to manufacture a run when Brittney Baker walked, then came around to score on an RBI single by Megan Bera.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Sonoma State's Nikki Freiberg and Kelsey Morhman drew walks to lead off the inning. Sacrificed into scoring position, both touched the plate on a clutch double by Williams.
In addition to her fine pitching line (7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run), Williams was the only player in the game with two hits as she went 2-for-4.
Sonoma State will meet Cal State Monterey Bay later on Saturday in a non-conference game.
