HONOLULU, Hawaii- Led by a huge win by senior
Andy Muesse, the Sonoma State men's tennis team put quite a scare into tenth-ranked Hawaii Pacific before falling 5-4. Muesse came up with a hard fought win at No. 1 singles against the nation's fifth-ranked player to highlight the action from the Western Oahu Tennis Center. The 34th-ranked Seawolves fall to 7-8 on the season while the Sea Warriors improve to 14-0.
Muesse defeated HPU's Henrik Bode 6-4, 4-6 (10-2) to earn perhaps his biggest win in a Seawolf uniform. Unranked for now, Muesse's win over Bode, coupled with a perfect record against Division II opponents could lead to a national ranking for the San Clemente native in the future. Muesse is 9-5 this season, but 6-0 against D-II foes.
SSU won on Monday at No. 1 doubles as Muesse and
Brett McNulty took care of Mark Mestan and Anton Samuilon, 9-8 (4).
Along with the victory at No. 1 singles by Muesse, SSU also earned wins from
Jeremy Heckley (No. 5) and
Quan Vu (No. 6).
The Seawolves hope their strong showing will carry over into Tuesday's showdown with No. 25 BYU-Hawaii.
