ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State used seven pitchers to hold Cal State East Bay in check on their way to their 21st consecutive victory, a 5-1 defeat of the Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. The second-ranked Seawolves improve to 27-1 overall and are now within just one game of the school record for consecutive wins. Cal State East Bay falls to 15-7 with the loss.
The Seawolves got on the board win single runs in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The lead was pushed to 5-0 in the eighth inning thanks to a
Vance Otake double, a
Dave Herman fielder's choice and an error by the Pioneers.
CSU East Bay threatened in the ninth, loading the bases and scoring on a sac fly, but
Tyler Fockler closed the door without any more damage being inflicted.
Nick Nosti and
Dave Herman each collected two more hits to lift their batting averages to .403 and .389 respectively. SSU had ten hits as a team, but left 11 men on base.
Matt Garnett was credited with the win after three no-hit innings. Since he was limited to three innings by a pre-arranged decision made before the game, he was eligible to pick up the victory as the starter.
Patrick Whelly and James McShane each had two hits to lead the Pioneers.
The Seawolves will now prepare for a showdown with No. 16 Chico State this weekend. Friday and Saturday's single games will be played at Chico's Nettleton Stadium before the series comes to Rohnert Park for a doubleheader on Sunday.
