ROHNERT PARK -- Fueled by 60 kills, a .351 hitting percentage and nine service aces to go along with 70 digs and 10.0 total blocks, the Sonoma State volleyball team knocked off visiting San Francisco State in four sets (25-17, 21-25, 25-15, 25-7) on Wednesday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves have won three straight and five of their last six to rise to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA. The Gators fall to 5-7 (3-4 CCAA).
Madelyn Densberger was Sonoma State's catalyst for the stellar all-around play by the team. She had 12 kills, a .550 hitting percentage, 13 digs, four assists, four service aces and two solo blocks for a total of 18 points.
Caylie Seitz smashed a match-high 17 kills, hitting at a .375 clip,
Kelsey Hull had 10 kills and 16 digs,
Regan Richert also had double-digit kills with 10.
Kaitlyn Connolly led all players defensively with 21 digs. Four of the 10 blocks by SSU were off the hands of
Rachel Andrews, who had three solo rejections at the net.
As a team, Sonoma hit .351 for the night, including a .556 clip in the fourth set in which the Seawolves had 15 kills and no errors in 27 attacks en route to the match-clinching 25-7 drubbing that SSU unleashed on SFSU.
The Seawolves hit better than .350 in three of the four sets on Wednesday, but the second set was a different story. In the Gators' only set win, a 25-21 triumph, Sonoma State hit just .143 while SF State was .235. For the visitors, Kaileen Mejia led the way with 11 kills and a .409 hit percentage.
Sonoma State will hit the road for two games this weekend, starting with a Friday night matchup at Cal State Monterey Bay before a Saturday night tilt with Cal State East Bay, both at 7:00 pm. The Seawolves will then return home next Friday (Oct. 10) to host Cal State Stanislaus.
