ROHNERT PARK -- Down three goals with 30 minutes to go, the Sonoma State men's soccer team rallied with goals by
Eric Alvarado and
Brenton Frame, but an elusive equalizer never materialized as the Seawolves were beaten at home by Cal State San Bernardino, 4-3. Frame was responsible for two of the Seawolves' goals on a day in which they outshot the Coyotes by a healthy margin, 17-7. The loss drops Sonoma State to 6-5-1, 1-3-1 CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino snaps a four-game losing skid to improve to 5-4-0, 1-4-0 CCAA.
The Seawolves were left to play catch up all day thanks to two early Coyote goals by Diego Mendoza (9') and Alfonso Cano (14'). A third goal came in the 21st minute, again by Cano, leaving the Seawolves frustrated, not to mention in a 3-0 hole.
Sonoma showed some signs of life when Frame belted one in off a corner kick in the 34th minute, allowing the Seawolves to enter the break down just two, at 3-1.
Though they continued to control the ball and make the Coyote defense work, Sonoma's deficit grew on another defensive letdown when Juan Carlos Gonzalez scored from about 15 yards out on a Cano assist.
The game's sixth goal - and Sonoma State's second - came via
Eric Alvarado, who headed in a
Dylan Stafford feed from a fair distance out.
Frame's second goal came on a nicely crossed ball from
Armando Coronel. The Thousand Oaks native has scored in three of his last five to take the team's lead in goals scored (4).
After wins in four of their first five contests, the Seawolves are 2-4-1 over their last seven. They will try to right the ship on Sunday when rival Chico State comes to Seawolf Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 am.
