POMONA, Calif. -- Madelyn Densberger led all hitters with 14 kills and
Caylie Seitz added 13 as the Sonoma State volleyball team snuck past Cal Poly Pomona in four sets (25-18, 29-27, 22-25, 28-26) on Friday night at Kellogg Gym in Pomona. The Seawolves rise to 15-5 overall and remain atop the conference standings at 13-3 in CCAA action. The Broncos fall to 11-8 (9-7 CCAA).
CPP was first on the board in set one as a kill from Christen Williams put up a Bronco point. The Seawolves came back with two of their own and didn't let the Broncos see the lead for the remainder of the set. SSU secured set one 25-18.
Set two saw the Seawolves leading a majority of the way through, the Broncos pulled within a point a number of times, yet were unable to even things up until the scoreboard read 21 all. The two teams traded the lead a couple of times, and the Broncos held their own until the Seawolves managed to string a few together to take set two 29-27.
In set three the Broncos showed the resilience of their squad. Despite SSU quickly gaining a 9-3 advantage, CPP battled back and evened the score at 10 apiece. The Broncos held the lead until Sonoma pulled even with them at 17 points and again at 20 and 21. CPP stayed together and earned a 25-22 victory in set two.
The fourth and final set of the night remained close throughout. The Seawolves took an early lead, but the Broncos stayed right on their tail. The score was tied up several times in the set. The two teams matched numbers at seven, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, and 26. Unfortunately the Broncos superb effort proved fruitless as the Seawolves pulled ahead to win the set and the match 28-26.
Kelsey Hull added 11 kills in the victory to go along with 14 digs.
Kaitlyn Connolly led all defenders with 18 digs.
Regan Richert smashed eight kills to contribute to SSU's kill margin of 54-52.
Courtney Seda (22) and
