TURLOCK, Calif. -- With a 3-0 sweep of host Cal State Stanislaus on the final night of the regular season, the Sonoma State volleyball team captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Volleyball Championship, the first such title for an SSU women's team since the school joined the conference back in 1998.
The Seawolves (20-6, 18-4 CCAA) become the first team other than Cal State San Bernardino in nine seasons to win the CCAA banner and, in turn, earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament which begins next weekend at a site to be determined.
The last time Sonoma State won a conference title, the Seawolves were in the now-defunct Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC) — a team that current Cal State Stanislaus head coach Christina Lore (formerly Difani) was a major part of during the 1997 season. It was the last season SSU competed in the NCAC.
With a CCAA title on their minds, SSU played like the conference champions, especially in the third and final set. After 25-13 and 25-12 wins in the first two sets, the Seawolves rolled out to a 14-0 lead with
Kelsey Hull serving. Hull ended up with five aces on the night, to go along with 10 digs and seven kills. Six of Seitz's match-high 12 kills came during the 14-0 run to open the third and final frame. The Seawolves eventually took a 20-2 lead before closing out the match with the 25-6 win and the 3-0 match victory.
Madelyn Densberger scored 11 kills,
Rachel Andrews had eight and
Ashley Robinson chipped in with six.
Kaitlyn Connolly had a match-high 17 digs while
Calan Seitz and
Courtney Seda handed out 22 and 18 assists, respectively.
Blair Ehrlich had six kills to lead the Warriors. Rachel Parson and Jocelyn Cervantes each had six digs and Parsons recorded 15 assists.
Sonoma State will now wait to find out where it will head for the NCAA Division II West Regional scheduled for next Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 20-22). Hosting duties are typically awarded to the top-ranked team in the region, and entering play this weekend, Northwest Nazarene held the No. 1 spot with a 22-2 overall record. Northwest Nazarene -- located in Nampa, Idaho -- improved to 24-2 with two wins over the weekend and should remain in the top spot when the NCAA tournament field is announced via a live selection show Sunday at 7:00 pm Pacific Standard Time on NCAA.com. The Seawolves entered the weekend ranked sixth in the region; the Top 8 in Sunday evening's final ranking will qualify for the regional.
