West Region Champions Are Off To Louisville After 3-1 Win!

NAMPA, Idaho -- The Sonoma State volleyball team earned a four-set victory over Dixie State on Saturday night in Nampa, Idaho to capture the 2014 NCAA Division II West Region title for the first time in program history!  The Seawolves (23-6) will head to Knights Hall on the campus of Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky for the NCAA Elite Eight and will play Central Region champion Southwest Minnesota State (24-9) in the national quarterfinal on Dec. 4 at 2:30 pm Eastern Time (11:30 am Pacific Time).

Sonoma State got off to a quick start early in the first set that saw a 5-5 tie turn into a 13-6 Seawolf lead.  Dixie State answered with four straight points though, which brought it back to trail just 13-10.  It didn't faze the Seawolves, however, as they begun to pull away for the 25-18 win in the first set.

The second set stayed close all the way down to the end. After leading by as many as six points, the Seawolves allowed the Red Storm to get within one point on three occasions late, the last being an 18-17 SSU lead, but Dixie could never get over the hump and Sonoma snuck away with two of the last three points to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Sonoma State again started hot, but relinquished the lead in favor of an 11-10 Dixie State advantage.  From there on out, it was neck-and-neck between both squads.  Both teams staved off several match points in an epic back-and-forth battle, but the Red Storm, not going down without a fight, pulled out the 31-29 win and cut the Seawolf match lead in half at 2-1.

In the fourth and what would be the final set, Sonoma State held an 11-8 lead over Dixie State when the Seawolves hit the gas and the Storm couldn't keep up.  Sonoma outscored Dixie 14-3 over the second half of the set to clinch the 25-11 win, the 3-1 match victory and the West Region title.

Kelsey Hull was unstoppable Saturday night, smashing 21 kills with a .443 hitting percentage, adding 13 digs.  Caylie Seitz, the tournament MVP, recorded 19 kills to go along with three blocks, Madelyn Densberger had 12 kills, 15 digs and four service aces and Regan Richert added 11 kills.  Courtney Seda and Calan Seitz once again shared the setting duties, passing out 31 and 29, respectively, in addition to double-digit digs -- Seda had 13 and Seitz had 12.  Defensively, Kaitlyn Connolly defended 12 attacks, Ashley Robinson had six blocks and six digs while Rachel Andrews has two blocks.

As a team, the Seawolves hit .272 while holding the Red Storm to just .190 on offense.

Sonoma State is now 1-1 in NCAA West Region finals -- the Seawolves lost to Cal State San Bernardino in three sets back on Nov. 19, 2011 in San Bernardino in the only other West Region final SSU appeared in.  The Seawolves' first opponent, Southwest Minnesota State won the Central Region tournament after upsetting the seven-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and the region's top seed, Minnesota Duluth, on Saturday.
