TURLOCK, Calif. -- The No. 4 seed and 21st-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team held a 16-14 shot advantage in the match, but it would be top seed and sixth-ranked Cal State L.A. to outscore and defeat the Seawolves 3-0 in Friday's semifinal action at the CCAA Championship Tournament in Turlock. Sonoma (14-5-1) has been eliminated from the conference tournament and will await word to see if it will make an appearance in next weekend's NCAA Division II West Regional.
The Seawolves entered the weekend as the No. 6 team in the official NCAA regional rankings, and while the Top 6 teams in the final poll that will be revealed via a live selection show at NCAA.com on Monday at 4:00 pm will qualify for the national tournament, none of the six teams included a team from the Pacific West Conference, which will award one of its teams an automatic qualifier.
Sonoma State saw its fair share of chances throughout the game, including a couple of attempts off the posts and three other shots on target that were saved by All-CCAA First Team goalkeeper Yi Du, who recorded her 13th shutout of the season. On the other end of the field, Cal State L.A.'s Amalia Arvidsson was busy, netting all three goals for the Golden Eagles, including two in the second half -- within two minutes of each other -- to lift the CCAA's regular season champions into the conference finals where they will face the winner of the other semifinal match, No. 2 seed Chico State, which knocked off Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 in double overtime earlier in the day.
Cecilia Sifuentes paced the Seawolves with a team-leading four shots while
Sara Van Wagoner,
Lauren Curtin,
Margi Osmundson and
Jessica Jordan each accounted for two shots.
Ashley Luis, who got the start in goal for SSU, worked the first 57 minutes of action before giving way to
Allison Hadidian for the final 33 minutes. In fact, Luis later entered the game as a field player and fired a shot that sailed high.
Monday's NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Selection Show will air live on NCAA.com, beginning at 4:00 pm Pacific Standard Time.
