Ashley Robinson at The Wolves' Den on Saturday night with a sweeping victory (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night.
With the Seawolves' victory and a Cal State San Bernardino loss to Cal Poly Pomona in five sets, Sonoma State (18-5, 16-3 CCAA) extends its lead in the CCAA standings by one and a half games with three to play in the regular season. The Otters dropped to 8-12 in conference play and 8-16 overall.
Caylie Seitz led all players with 15 kills and a .464 hitting percentage, followed by
Kelsey Hull with 12 and
Madelyn Densberger with 10.
Calan Seitz had 28 assists on the night to go with six digs.
Kaitlyn Connolly led the Seawolves defensively with 12 digs.
The first set saw the Seawolves in control for most of it. After the Otters scored the first point of the match, the Seawolves reeled off the next five points and cruised to a 25-14 victory. The second set saw the Otters jump out to a 7-2 lead, but the Seawolves chipped away and tied the set at 10. The Seawolves nursed a lead at 20-19, but the Seawolves took the next five out of six points to secure the victory and 2-0 lead entering the third set. In the third set, it appeared the Seawolves would have an easy time closing out the contest after taking a 20-9 lead. But the Otters scored 11 out of the next 14 points to close the gap to 23-20. The Seawolves regrouped in time to clinch at 25-20 victory to sweep the Otters.
The Seawolves won the kill and assist categories easily, winning them 49-26 and 46-26, respectively. The Seawolves also won the hitting percentage by a margin of .337 to .111 for the Otters.
Cal State Monterey's Rachel Cookus led all players with 13 digs. Jessica Malcom led the Otters with eight kills.
Sonoma State hits the road for its last three games of the regular season, beginning with a matchup awith San Francisco State on Tuesday night at 7 pm, followed by games against Chico State on Friday and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
