ROHNERT PARK -- After giving up an early goal, the Sonoma State men's soccer team responded with an equalizer by
Raspreet Sandhu in the second half to force overtime before
Sean Callahan ended the game with a shot from point-blank range in the 94th minute, lifting the Seawolves to a 2-1 victory over visiting California Baptist on Thursday in Rohnert Park. Sonoma moves to 2-1-0 on the year, thanks to back-to-back overtime victories, while the Lancers remain winless at 0-2-1.
"That was a gritty win," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "Cal Baptist was very good, so that must have been a great one for the fans -- back and forth with lots of chances and a golden goal overtime win!"
Ziemer added, "Cal Baptist is going to beat some teams so that is an important win for us."

It didn't take long for the visiting Lancers to put one up on the scoreboard. Just 7:09 into the match, Paul Oliver connected on a shot from close range to beat SSU goalkeeper
Sean Taufer to the net. The CBU lead would hold up for 49 minutes before the Seawolves took advantage of a turnover by the Lancers in their backfield and passes by
Armando Coronel and
Brenton Frame found the feet of Sandhu, who rocketed a shot into the right corner of the net from 18 yards out to tie the match at 1-1.
Both teams would get very physical through the end of regulation. The Lancers almost took a lead in the 89th minute when Aidan Apodaca launched a 35-yard shot from near the right sideline that bent up and over everyone, but banged off the crossbar and the ensuing shot by Taylor Moe on the rebound sailed wide and the game went to extra time.
In the first overtime, that's when Sandhu dribbled down the right sideline, sent a cross into
Raad Aljabi on the far post, but Aljabi flicked it back out to Callahan, who then slammed the one-timer past CBU netminder Ian Clark for the game-winner at 93:34.
"Sean's work rate was excellent and he showed a lot of composure on the game winning goal," Ziemer said.
In the end, the Seawolves outshot the Lancers 14-8 and took more corner kicks (8-2). Taufer made three saves in goal, all three in the second half. His counterpart, Clark, made four saves.
"We were missing captain
Dylan Stafford to injury,
Andres Ramirez stepped in and played great defensively," said Ziemer.
Sonoma State will head to Fresno on Monday to face Fresno Pacific at 7:00 pm before coming back home to Rohnert Park next Thursday (Sept. 18) to host Academy of Art at 5:00 pm.
