Seawolves' Win Streak Snapped In 3-1 Loss To Argonauts

BELMONT, Calif. -- Cedric Dinane scored his first goal of the season in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Sonoma State men's soccer team saw their four-match win streak snapped with a 3-1 loss at Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday afternoon in Belmont.  The Seawolves (4-2-0) will play one more non-conference match -- at home on Tuesday at 4:30 pm against Hawaii Pacific -- before opening up CCAA play against Cal State Monterey Bay at home on Friday.  The Argonauts improved to 2-3-1.

"That was a tough loss," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "Credit to (Notre Dame de Namur) because they fought hard, but we also had enough chances to win that game."

The game featured both offenses advancing from the start with NDNU's Jay Tsuruoka making a great save on a shot by Raspreet Sandhu in the opening minutes to keep the game scoreless.  In the 13th minute, the Argos earned a corner kick and Hunter Le Blanc ran over to take the kick.  He stepped up and bent a perfect corner over SSU goalkeeper Sean Taufer's head and into the back of the net for a 1-0 NDNU lead.

Sonoma State nearly evened the score in the 16th minute, but Jose Avalos' shot from outside the box clanged off the pole.

NDNU was back at it in the 39th minute with another set piece.  Once again Le Blanc was called on to take the kick, sending a free kick from the right wing into the box.  The ball travelled to the back post where Robert Hines III knocked the ball into the net for his first career goal and the 2-0 Argos lead.  The Seawolves had another chance at getting a score back on a header by Dinane, but Tsuruoka came up big again.

Le Blanc almost made it 3-0 in the opening minutes of the second half when he dribbled to the top of the box and sent a low bullet that hit off the post and wide of the goal.  It wasn't until the 55th minute when the Seawolves finally cut the lead in half when Dinane sent a perfect shot from the right side to the far post and into the net.

The Seawolves found other scoring chances soon thereafter on several set pieces and corner kicks into the box, but SSU's best chance came in the final minute when their free kick from just outside the box was blocked by the wall.  They earned another free kick from 45 yards out but the NDNU defense cleared the ball once again.

In the waning moments, NDNU's Tyler Matas went on a breakaway and with no defenders in front of him, he dribbled the ball towards the net as the clock wound down and tapped it in as time expired to seal with game at 3-1.

"It's tough to come from behind at their place, but I thought we were going to tie up until the last moments of the game," Ziemer said.  "We need to recover and then get ready for a last non-conference game at home versus Hawaii Pacific and then conference starts on Friday."

NDNU held a 17-15 shot advantage for the game, including an 11-6 margin in the second half.  Tsuruoka made four saves for the Argos while Taufer made five for Sonoma State.
