Win Streak Jumps To Nine As Seawolves Cut Down 'Jacks 2-1

ROHNERT PARK -- Makenzie Maher scored just 21 seconds before halftime to break a scoreless tie, and after surrendering the equalizer 71 seconds after the halftime intermission, Sonoma State's Melissa Lafranchi netted the go-ahead goal -- and eventually the game-winner -- in the 51st minute to lift the Seawolves to a 2-1 victory over visiting Humboldt State on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field.  Sonoma remains perfect in 2014, rising to 9-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the CCAA.  The Lumberjacks saw their six-match win streak come to an end, dropping to 6-2-0 and 1-1-0 in conference play.

The Seawolves dominated the entire first half, outshooting the 'Jacks 9-0, but it wasn't until the ninth shot at 44:39 that the hosts found the scoreboard.  Kristal Luna passed into Maher in the box, who headed the ball home from five yards out to give SSU the lead at halftime.

Soon after the intermission, Humboldt State knotted the match at 1-1 after a free kick by Colette Behen started a sequence of headed balls by both teams in the box before Coutney Rebata's header found netting at 46:11.  The score didn't stay tied for long as Lafranchi headed a pass from Marissa Marable into the goal for the 2-1 lead at 50:45.

From then on, the teams went shot-for-shot as both Sonoma and Humboldt would take six shots apiece.  However, none of the 12 shots by either squad would find the net, much thanks to three saves by SSU's goalkeeper Ashley Luis, who came in for Allison Hadidian in the 51st minute.  HSU's Amber Woolcock made six saves, three of which came in the final 45 minutes.  Overall, the Seawolves would go on to outshoot the Lumberjacks 17-7.

Sonoma State will hit the road Friday to faceoff with Cal State East Bay in Hayward.  Kickoff from Pioneer Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
