POMONA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona's vaunted defense held Sonoma State to a season-low 48 points on Saturday night as the Broncos emerged from a first place battle with a 70-48 win. The Seawolves, who entered the weekend with sole possession of first place in the CCAA, fall for the second straight night, dropping to third place with an 8-4, 5-3 CCAA record. The Broncos stay even with Cal State Stanislaus atop the conference at 6-2.
Sonoma State scored the first two points of the game before the opening tip even occured, when a technical was called on the Broncos and
Mike Harris sank both free throws. As it turned out, that would be Sonoma's last lead of the game. The Broncos built up a 23-11 lead midway through the half and held on to a 12-point advantage through the end of the frame.
While the Seawolves were able to shoot 52.6% (10-for-19) in the second half, they could get no closer than nine points.
James Davis posted a team-high 18 points. The Seawolves' next-highest scorer was
James Slade with seven.
Nathan Molony-Benjamin came down with a team-high seven rebounds.
Terrence Drisdom scored 18 points to lead the Broncos.
The Seawolves will try to get back on track next week when they travel up the state to play Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
