Seawolves Suffer First CCAA Defeat With 91-82 Loss To Otters

ROHNERT PARK -- JJ Mina netted a team-high 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting with six rebounds, but the Sonoma State men's basketball team fell victim to a late Cal State Monterey Bay rally, falling 91-82 on Friday night at The Wolves' Den to open the 2015 calendar year.  The Seawolves' six-game win streak was snapped in the loss, their first CCAA defeat in five contests, falling to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA and into a three-way tie for first place with Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.  The Otters improve to 7-4 (3-2 CCAA).

Despite leading for nearly 30 minutes in the ballgame, Sonoma State couldn't hold onto it in the end.  The Seawolves held a six-point lead with 5:51 in regulation after Nathan Molony-Benjamin hit a jump shot in the paint to put the hosts up 74-68, but that's when CSU Monterey Bay went on a tear, reeling off a 23-8 run over the final 5:33 to hand the Otters the nine-point victory.

Mina (18), James Davis (15) and Mike Harris (12) scored in double-figures for Sonoma, but all three were plagued with foul trouble for the majority of the night.  Michael Avery contributed eight points and seven boards for SSU in 25 minutes of action.

As a team, the Seawolves hit 41.9 percent of their shots (26-62), including 37.0 percent from long range (10-27).  The hosts were also excellent at the free throw line, connecting on 20 of 23 shots from the stripe.

Evan Zeller led all players wth 23 points for Cal State Monterey Bay, one of four Otters to record double-digit scoring figures.  CSUMB was 50.9 percent shooting on the night (27-53) and 47.6 from the arc (10-21).  The visitors also spent some time at the free throw line, hitting 27 of their 35 attempts.

Sonoma State returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Cal State East Bay at The Wolves' Den at 7:30 pm.
