SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Down by nine points with 3:26 left to play in ballgame, the Sonoma State men's basketball team rallied to get within one point after a pair of free throws by
Jabri Jenkins with 5.1 seconds left. The ensuing inbounds pass by host Cal State San Bernardino was then intercepted by
Khalid Johnson at midcourt, who then passed it up to
James Davis for the potential game-winning three-pointer, but the attempt rimmed off and the Coyotes (8-9, 8-6 CCAA) held on to defeat the Seawolves (9-9, 6-8 CCAA), 78-77, on Saturday night in San Bernardino.
Sonoma State led for 25 minutes of the contest on Saturday, taking a nine-point lead into the final 12:38 of the second half after a Davis three-pointer. However, Cal State San Bernardino went on a 27-9 run over the next nine minutes, going 9 for 10 from the floor, 3 for 4 from beyond the arc and 6 for 8 from the free throw line to turn its nine-point deficit into its own nine-point lead with 3:26 left in the game.
The Seawolves came back to score seven of the next eight points to get within three points at 71-68 with 2:02 remaining. Over a minute later,
Mike Harris connected -- and was fouled -- on a three-pointer and got SSU within one point at 76-75 on his converted four-point play with 41 seconds left. The Coyotes inbounded the ball and worked the shot clock down to single digits before Jacob Thomas scored a layup with 11 seconds left to regain a three-point lead.
CSUSB fouled Jenkins six ticks later, only for the junior to calmly nail both attempts and put SSU down by one. Instead of passing the ball in close, an inbounds launch to midcourt was made by the Coyotes, but the Johnson to Davis connection at the buzzer came up empty, securing the narrow win for Cal State San Bernardino in front of 1,565 fans at Coussoulis Arena.
Three Seawolves scored in double-figures, led by Davis, who finished with 27 points with six three-pointers.
JJ Mina finished with 19 points and Harris with 12.
Sonoma State, which now sits in a three-way tie for seventh place with Cal State L.A. and San Francisco State in the CCAA standings, two games behind Humboldt State and CSU San Bernardino (both at 8-6), returns to action on Friday at Cal State East Bay. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
