Grassl Earns 250th Coaching Victory, #23 Seawolves Beat LA

ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's volleyball team took the first two sets with ease, but after getting blown out in the third, it held off a pesky Cal State L.A. squad in the fourth to capture the 3-1 victory (25-17, 25-17, 15-25, 25-23) on Wednesday night at The Wolves' Den.

It is the 11th straight win for the 23rd-ranked Seawolves (15-3, 11-1 CCAA), matching the program's consecutive wins record set back in 2009, and it was also the 250th head coaching victory for Bear Grassl.  The Golden Eagles fell to 15-6 overall and into a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings at 7-5.

Many of the statistical categories were nearly identical in the four-set affair; Sonoma State led in kills (61-59) and assists (57-56) while Cal State L.A. led in hitting percentage (.282-.280) and digs (75-72).  The Seawolves outserved the Golden Eagles (7-1 in aces), but CSULA earned back several of those points in blocks (9.5-6.0).

The fourth set was by far the most exciting frame of the night, accounting for 10 of the 12 tie scores and 2 of the 3 lead changes in the match. It was Densberger and Emily Papale to secure the win for Sonoma with back-to-back kills when the score was tied at 23-23.

Caylie Seitz went for 16 kills while Madelyn Densberger hammered in 11 kills, adding 13 digs and three aces.  Rachel Andrews hit .571 with nine kills, blocking four attacks (two solo) as Lexi Reddick chipped in with nine kills and nine digs of her own.  Both Papale and Kelsey McIntire slammed eight kills in the win.  Courtney Seda had a team-best 16 digs, followed by three others in double-figures -- Kaitlyn Connolly (15), Densberger and Calan Seitz (12).  Both Seda and Seitz handed out 23 assists each.

Cal State L.A. was led by the efforts of Iona Lofrano, who recorded match-highs of 27 kills and 24 digs, matching her career-best in kills and setting a new career-best in digs.  Lofrano had 14 digs in the first set alone.

Sonoma State will go for a program-record 12th consecutive win when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den.
