POMONA, Calif. -- After 72 minutes of scoreless play,
Katie Mohr broke the tie with her third goal of the season, then just three minutes later,
Bella Amyx netted what would be a very important insurance goal as the Sonoma State women's soccer team surrendered its first goal in over a month late in the match, but held on for the 2-1 victory over host Cal Poly Pomona on the final day of the regular season Sunday.
The ninth-ranked Seawolves will head into next weekend's CCAA tournament semifinal with a 13-1-3 overall record and an unbeaten 10-0-2 mark in conference play. It is just the fifth time in program history that SSU has finished a conference slate without a loss, the last time was in 1998 when Sonoma eventually went on to play in the NCAA national championship game. The Broncos, who have also clinched a spot in the upcoming CCAA tournament, fell to 9-6-2 (6-5-1 CCAA).
After Mohr and Amyx put the Seawolves on top, 2-0, the Broncos finally got one past
Ashley Luis for the first time in 38 days and it came with just 3:50 left in regulation. It snapped Luis' nine-game shutout streak, a streak that lasted 958 minutes, 2 seconds, which began way back on Sept. 23rd. Pomona outshot Sonoma, 11-8, including 6-4 in the second half, and Luis made three saves in the victory.
Sonoma State, the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CCAA tournament, will fly home Saturday evening, only to travel back to Pomona in a couple of days for Friday's CCAA semifinal against the winner of Tuesday's matchup between No. 4 seed UC San Diego and No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona. Friday's semifinal match will kickoff at 1:30 pm.
