OAKLAND, Calif. -- James Slade and
David Ahern scored a team-high 14 points apiece, as the Sonoma State men's basketball team used a big second half to defeat host Holy Names, 81-73, on Tuesday night in Oakland. The Seawolves improved to 2-1 this season while Holy Names fell to 1-2.
Slade scored 11 of his 14 points in the final 20 minutes and 10 of Ahern's 14 also came after halftime. Sonoma spent much of the second half at the free throw line, but they made the most of it, going 22 for 27 (81.5 percent) from the charity stripe (and 26 of 33 for the game) Three other Seawolves scored in double-figures including
Luke Cochran (12),
Michael Avery (11) and
Jimmy Golden (10). Cochran and
Andy Mitchell brought down a team-high seven rebounds.
From the floor, SSU connected on 45.6 percent of its shots (26-57) and outrebounded HNU, 40-33. Holy Names shot 41.7 percent (25-60) for the game and was 9 for 24 from 3-point range.
Sonoma State will play at home for the first time this season on Friday at 7:30 pm, hosting Dixie State as part of the 15th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic on Friday and Saturday in The Wolves' Den. San Francisco State and Academy of Art will battle it out prior to the SSU-DSU game, scheduled for 5:30 pm.
