Seawolves Eliminated From CCAA Tournament With 3-1 Loss

TURLOCK, Calif. -- TJ Perez gave the Sonoma State men's soccer team an early 1-0 lead, but Stanislaus State's Jose Ramirez scored three times in the second half to help the host and No. 4 seed Warriors defeat and eliminate the No. 5 seed Seawolves with a 3-1 decision Tuesday night at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

The Seawolves  (10-7-2) were ranked at No. 7 in the last official NCAA Division II West Region rankings that were released last Wednesday, but they have gone 1-2 since and only the top six will receive at large bids into the NCAA tournament.  The NCAA will unveil the tournament field via a live selection show on Monday (Nov. 9th) at 4:30 pm on NCAA.com.

"That was a tough one," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "We played great in the first half and we were a little shaky to start the second half, but settled in and I thought we were going to be okay."

"(Stanislaus State) puts defenses under a lot of pressure because they kick everything long and high and they have big athletic players up front that battle for everything," Ziemer added.  "We were able to handle them in the run of play, but they live on their set pieces and it worked again. We are recruiting some 6-foot-7 defenders for next year."

Perez's goal at 18:58 was his seventh of the season, tying Brenton Frame for the team-lead in goals.  The 1-0 Seawolf lead held up until Ramirez scored the first of his three goals at 64:22.  He struck again at 76:04, then again two minutes later at 78:38 to deflate SSU's hopes of advancing to Friday's semifinal against top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills in Pomona.

The Warriors outshot the Seawolves 22-8 in the match, including a lopsided 16-4 output in the second half alone.

"We were missing two seniors (Dylan Stafford and Evan Filipczyk) because of injury and we missed them, but the guys left it all out on the field today and I'm really proud of them for that," said Ziemer.

Ziemer finished by saying: "Hopefully we get a call for the NCAA tournament, but if not, it was the last game for seniors Sean Callahan, Brenton Frame, Sean Taufer, Tyler Troup, Rodrigo Garcia, and Stafford and Filipczyk. They will be missed."
