OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Three Sonoma State women's basketball players scored in double-figures, led by the 13 points from
Kayla Coloyan, but it wouldn't be enough in Saturday's 73-61 loss to Cal State San Marcos at MiraCosta College in Oceanside. The Seawolves drop to 0-2 in CCAA play and 4-5 overall. The Cougars earned their first-ever CCAA win, rising to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Sonoma got off to a quick start, taking a 14-9 lead just six minutes into the contest, but CSU San Marcos dropped in 10 unanswered points over the next five minutes to take a 19-14 lead, one the Cougars would never relinquish the rest of the way.
Coloyan's season-best point output came in 25 minutes of play, hitting 3 of 7 three-pointers and 4 of 10 shots total.
Madison Burroughs added 12 points and
Jessica Mitz chipped in with 11 in the loss.
Hannah Sourek had a team-high nine rebounds to go along with eight points.
Although the Seawolves held an advantage in rebounds (38-28), turnovers is what hurt the visitors, giving up the ball 19 times which the Cougars turned into 21 points. CSUSM gave the ball away just 11 times, allowing SSU to convert them into only six points.
Cal State San Marcos had two players score 25 points each -- Ashley Jenkins and Savannah Camp, both in 31 minutes of action. Camp also brought down 10 rebounds and had three blocks in front of the Cougars' homecoming crowd on Saturday.
Sonoma State will play its next game on the other side of the state on Friday, taking on Humboldt State in Arcata at 5:30 pm before returning home on Dec. 19th to host Chico State.
