Men's Basketball Falls To Broncos In Friday Night Action

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal Poly Pomona got out to a big early lead, then held off several Sonoma State second half rallies to earn a 62-51 win over the Seawolves on Friday night in The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves' playing without the services of leading scorer James Davis, were led by 11 points from both JJ Mina and David Ahern.  The loss drops Sonoma State to 11-10, 8-9 CCAA.  The second place Broncos improve to 13-4 in conference play and 17-5 overall.

The Seawolves would capture the game's first two points on a pair of free throws by Andy Mitchell.  That, however, would be followed by an 8-0 Cal Poly Pomona run that gave them a lead they would fail to relinquish the rest of the way.  The Broncos' advantage grew to as many as 19 by the end of the first half as they sent Sonoma State to the locker room with a 35-16 deficit.

Trailing 40-18 by the first couple minutes of the second half, the Seawolves showed some resilience, reeling off a 10-2 run to get within 14 with 12:48 left.  Sonoma would continue to hack away, eventually working the lead to ten on several occasions, but a 15-3 Bronco run over a seven-minute stretch midway through the second half effectively ended any legitimate hopes of a comeback.

To their credit, the Seawolves refused to give up, finishing on a 12-1 kick over the final three minutes to put the final margin at 11.

Mina finished with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 work from the charity stripe.  He also had five rebounds and an assist.  Ahern's 11 came on 4-of-10 shooting, including three three-pointers.  Andy Mitchell had eight points and six rebounds and Zen Maki, making just his second career start, also finished with eight points.

Terrence Drisdom and Jordan Faison shared game-high honors with 16 points for Cal Poly Pomona.  Faison pitched in with seven rebounds as well.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday night when they host the Tritons of UC San Diego.  Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
