ROHNERT PARK -- After dropping a 3-2 decision in the opener, the Sonoma State baseball team salvaged a split with visiting Central Washington on Saturday, winning 5-1 in game two to capture the series win in non-conference action at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park.
Alex Crosby and
Eric Ehlow smashed back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning of game two to break open a 2-1 lead for the Seawolves (3-2), en route to the series-finale win over the Wildcats (5-3).
Game 1: Central Washington 3, Sonoma State 2The Seawolves were down 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth and scored their second run on a
Cody Morris pinch-hit RBI groundout that scored
Spencer Neve and advanced
Daniel Caresio to third base with two outs. But following the Morris RBI, Crosby would ground out to shortstop to end the threat for the Seawolves and send them to the break in-between games with a tough loss.
Devin Alexander and Caresio each had two hits for Sonoma State. The other Seawolf RBI came on a Crosby pinch-hit single that scored Alexander in the fifth inning that gave the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.
The winning pitcher for Central Washington was Cory Welch (1-0).
Mitch Coombs took the loss (0-1) for the Seawolves.
Haydon Turpin started the game for the Seawolves and was impressive, going five innings and giving up no earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
Ryan Atkinson led the Wildcat attack, going 3 for 4 with an RBI. Welch came out of the bullpen to pitch five innings and struck out eight.
Game Two: Sonoma State 5, Central Washington 1Sonoma State got going early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The first run came on an Ehlow RBI groundout to shortstop that scored Caresio. The second run came on a wild pitch that scored Phillip Ramos. The Crosby home run in the fifth inning was crushed over the right field wall. Two pitches later, Ehlow crushed one of his own over the left-center outfield wall to the excitement of the crowd at Seawolf Diamond. Ehlow totaled 1 for 3 with two RBI's in the game.
Devin Bradley went four innings only surrendering a run on five hits with two strikeouts and picked up the win (1-0).
Matt Hammonds and
Tyler Sanders finished off the seven inning game throwing shutout ball over the last three innings to send the Seawolves home happy.
Jacob Forrester suffered his first defeat for Central Washington giving up two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Kasey Bielec and Jonathan Dailey each collected two hits in three at bats for the Wildcats.
Sonoma State hits the road for a game non-conference game at Holy Names University at Laney College in Oakland on Tuesday at 7:00 pm before opening up CCAA play at Cal State L.A. next weekend.
