CARSON, Calif. -- It took overtime to decide the Friday night matchup between Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills, but the Seawolves came up on the short-end of the scoreboard in a 69-64 defeat. Sonoma State falls to 8-13 in CCAA play and 11-14 overall. The Toros improve to 3-18 in conference play and 7-20 overall.
The score was close throughout and featured 15 ties.
James Davis hit a three-pointer with 1:29 remaining in the first half to give the Seawolves a three-point lead. The Toros would score two more points before the halftime horn to make it a 25-24 Seawolf lead. It was a back-and-forth affair in the second half that saw each team take multiple turns having the lead. With 13 seconds remaining in regulation,
James Slade hit a layup to tie the game at 56. The Toros got off a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it was no good and the game would go to overtime. The Toros would outscore the Seawolves 13-8 in the extra frame and the Seawolves would have to leave the court with a difficult defeat.
The Seawolves shot 45.3% (24-53) from the field compared with 46.8% (22-47) for the Toros. The Seawolves had a great night for the three-point line going 7 for 15 (46.7%). The Toros shot 75% (21-28) from the charity-stripe to the Seawolves 9-17 (52.9%).
Slade led all Sonoma State scorers and set a new career-high for points with 17.
JJ Mina had 13 points and eight rebounds. Davis had 11 points, nine of them coming on three's.
Darnell Martin led all scorers with 20 points for the Toros. Teammate Emmett Duvall had 15 points.
Sonoma State concludes their season at Cal State Los Angeles Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 P.M.
