Baseball Forces Doubleheader Split At Home With #16 Tritons

ROHNERT PARK -- Devin Alexander accomplished a rare-feat as he got the game-winning  RBI's and picked up the win in relief as Sonoma State was able to come back from two down in the bottom of the sixth inning to win in game 2 of the Saturday doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond against UC San Diego, 5-3.

The win game two offset a 4-1 loss in game one. The doubleheader split leaves the Seawolves 11-12 in the CCAA and 17-15 overall. The Tritons are now 17-5 in the conference and 21-9 overall.

GAME ONE: #16 UC San Diego 4, Sonoma State 1

The Seawolves had trouble getting much going offensively against the Tritons in game one. Down 2-0, the Seawolves scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning when Alex Crosby continued on his recent-run of success at the plate when he singled home Dustyn Macaluso to bring the Seawolves within one. The pitching took over until the seventh inning when the Tritons plated a run to make it 3-1. The scored once more in the eighth and went to the break between games with a 4-1 decision.

Crosby and Eric Ehlow each had two hits for the Seawolves. Macaluso and Hayden Cronenbold had the other two hits.

DeVon Golden started the game and was good, but took the loss to see his record fall to 1-3. Golden went five innings, giving up one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Mitch Coombs, Cody Bennett, and Gerald Jamerson pitched the remaining innings combining for one earned run on five hits.

Alon Leichman picked up the win (5-0) for UC San Diego going six innings and giving up one earned run with six hits and four strikeouts. Justin Flatt led the way offensively going 3 for 5.

GAME TWO: Sonoma State 5, #16 UC San Diego 3

Heading into the bottom of the sixth down 3-1, the Seawolves were in danger of dropping the first three games of the weekend series, but a four-run sixth inning would make sure that didn't happen.

It started with a Macaluso single through the left side and continued with an infield hit by Jourdan Weiks. Crosby came through once again with a RBI single that scored Macaluso and advanced Weiks to second to make it 3-2. After a Spencer Neve walk that tied the game, the huge Alexander single put the Seawolves in front 5-3 a roar from the  #NomaNation. Alexander closed the door on the Tritons in the seventh inning and the Seawolves went home happy.

Macaluso went 2 for 3 in game two to bring his doubleheader totals to 3-6 with one RBI and two runs. It was a Macaluso triple in the third inning that scored Matthew Richards to tie the game at 1. The two run single by Alexander brought his game two totals to 1-3 with the two RBI's. Alexander pitched 1 2/3 innings to pick up his second win of the season against no defeats. Alexander only gave up a hit and struck out three. Pitching in his first game since his no-hitter against Cal State Stanislaus on March 20, Ryan Luna went 5 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits and six strikeouts.

Trevor Scott picked up the loss (4-4) for the Tritons going five innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits. Flatt continued his success from the first game going 2 for 3 with two RBI's.

The series concludes with a game starting at 11:00 A.M. Sunday at Seawolf Diamond.
